A NEW COUCH FOR OLD
Casanova/Puppy is now Ten Years Old

PART FOUR
Within a short period of time, I had organised the collection of the new couch from Roses at the Westwood Shopping Mall by several friends. However, soon after arranging this, I received a telephone call from the Associate who had sold me the couch at the Roses at Westwood Shopping Mall to tell me that due to some clerical error my chosen couch would need to be picked up from the Roses Discount Store at Hope Mills She asked if this would prove to be a problem for me, and if so, would I prefer it to be delivered by the store? Undaunted, and after a series of telephone calls, all was re-arranged, and collection was set for my friends to collect the couch at the Hope Mills Store.

Prior to having to make the pickup rearrangements, I had organised having the old couch removed from my house and then disposed of by another group of friends.
That day, the old couch had to be moved to my porch and stored there for a few days since they were unable to take it away for disposal immediately. This now left an empty space before the window that awaited the arrival of the new couch. However, before the couch could be moved Casanova/Puppy had to have one last snooze on it, and in his opinion, its rightful place.
One Last Snooze on HIS Couch. Now without any Cover and sadly looking the worse for ware.
Moving the Old Couch to the Porch
-oOo-
Several days later, my friends came to collect the Old Couch. They moved it to their truck and then drove it away. I watched the truck disappear down the street and found that I was feeling more than a little sad at its departure. I thought this was somewhat odd since I never found the couch comfortable or particularly appealing. It was also too large for my room and was now in a terrible state without a cover thanks to constant usage. All in all, I did not really like it, but found myself feeling somewhat disturbed to have now lost it! This makes no particular sense, I realise. But as some would say, Go Figure!
Departure of the Old Couch

Despite my feeling of a certain sadness at the departure of the Old Couch, Casanova/Puppy showed no sign of regret at its loss! Again, Go Figure!

The New Couch was picked up and brought to the house and quickly installed in the empty space prepared for it.
The New Couch in place
For sentimental reasons, I kept the cushions of the Old Couch

When Casanova/Puppy was allowed into the room, he immediately when over to examine this new piece of furniture. This he did by sniffing almost every square inch of it. He took his time doing this and made several trips around it and once it had evidently passed the Sniff Test, he jumped up on it. He next walked all over the seating area and then turned to look out of the window behind the couch. It seemed that the couch had passed all of his tests and he celebrated this by sitting down in one corner and began to stare at me. I took this to mean that he approved on his new couch. Soon after he stretched himself out and fell asleep.

Soon after introducing Casanova/Puppy to the New Couch, I decided to place a large beech towel over the seating. I did this to protect it, as I wasn’t sure if the nails of his paws would snare the fabric or not.

It would seem that all thoughts of the Old Couch were forgotten and Casanova/Puppy soon quickly settled in to the New Couch and found it to be a good place to sit, stretch out and snooze!

The New Couch has been Casanova/Puppy’s couch for almost a year now. It is interesting to note that its presence has brought about some profound changes to our lives. Some I like and some I am less happy about! However, he seems more that content with the new couch and how things have evolved.
Firstly, Casanova/Puppy no longer sleeps on my bed! I don’t think for a minute that he has ceded the bed to me, but rather he finds the new couch more agreeable to sleep. It is a perfect size to accommodate him when he chooses to stretch out fully. Each night when I go to bed, he follows me into the bedroom, but refuses to jump up on the bed. He now prefers to stretch out fully on the carpet, whereupon, I am now expected to get down onto the floor and stroke him for a while, as he falls asleep. After an hour or so, he wakens and walks to take his main sleep of the night on the couch. Very early of the following morning, he comes back to my bedroom and waits patiently for me to wake up. Should I not awaken at the time he expects me to, he will jump on the bed and come and look at me. This causes me to wake up quite quickly.
I should be happy about this new arrangement, but I have to confess that I do miss his presence.
Secondly, and perhaps the most disagreeable of the changes brought about by the presence of the new couch is that he dislikes anyone – and this seems to especially include me – from sitting on it. He will on occasion allow me to sit in one corner of the couch so that I may stroke him for a short period of time. However, once he feels that he has been stroked enough, he will jump down and take up residence on the floor! Should I move back to my chair, he will quickly jump back up and regain his place on HIS couch!
It seems that if he can not have the whole couch all to himself, he prefers to not sit on it at all! Casanova/Puppy evidently does not believe in sharing! I must admit that I find his action most upsetting.
Still, I must remember that it is my place to provide food, open doors, take him for short walks and to be ready to stroke him whenever he is in the mood!
Please remember that this couch is MINE!

I can understand the sadness you felt (on behalf of Casanova/puppy) when seeing the old couch driven away. You were thinking more of Casanova/puppy feelings – it was his personal couch – dogs like humans become attached.
The history of the couch I found amusing and accurate as to how dogs react to pleasure and/or displeasure. Animals can be more human than the humans! So pleased he likes and appreciates his new abode/throne.
The plus side – he even accompanies you Charles to your bedroom – to see you safely settled before he returns to the couch. Truly nice thoughtful gesture.
The couch seems tailor-made for Casanova/Puppy; what a perfect fit! Still, I can understand your distress at some of the changes it provoked. You just happened to pick the ideal furnishing that surpassed even your own company in its appeal. All your efforts made Casanova/Puppy one very content dog!
P.S. I wish I had your enviable circle of friends. I always have to pay a fortune whenever I buy something big and bulky that needs delivery!
