TALE 7: MY MOTHER’S WAR YEARS
My mother was supposed to deliver me at a hospital in Hertfordshire, but this did not happen as planned, and a Midwife needed to be called to her home at 11 Royston Street in Bethnal Green. The house has since been demolished and a Community Garden built on the site.
My father had been Compassionate Leave from his Regiment exercising in Yorkshire, but was not present in the house at my time of birth. My mother said that he was too busy to attend, as he was in the Bishop of Bonner, a public house close by. My grandmother did not visit my mother and me until I was at least twelve days old. Soon after her arrival, she and my father quickly moved to the Bishop of Bonner, presumably to celebrate my entrance into the world!
