THE BUILDINGS

In 1856, Thomas Burberry opened his first establishment in Basingstoke where he focussed his efforts on the development of clothing for the outdoors.  By 1870, his business was well established, and in 1879, he had invented his brand of Gabardine.

THE MOVE TO LONDON – FLAGSHIP STORES

In 1891, Mr. Burberry opened his first store in London, at 30 The Haymarket.  At this establishment, he produced a garment known as the Walking Burberry and also began to concentrate on garments for the outdoors, which led to the success of garments made with Gabardine when he fitted the expedition of Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) to the Antarctic (1910 and 1912).

1909 was an extremely busy and profitable year for Burberry’s, since Mr. Burberry introduced his first line of women’s wear and opened his first store in Paris at 8-10 Boulevard Malsherbes (see below).

In 1913, Burberry’s moved into new and larger premises at 18-22 The Haymarket.  The store was designed by Walter Cave (1863-1939) and was, and still is, an imposing building.

The store was constructed in Beaux Arts Style with an Entablature supported by Doric Columns and with curved arches to support the first floor and second floor windows.  The building also has a large clock projecting out from high on the first floor which bears the name of the company.

The building served as both Burberrys Flagship Store and Office Headquarters, and although The Company had refurbished the interior during the early 2000’s, the company decided to move to new establishments in 2008.  At this time, The Company had decided to have separate buildings for its Administration and for Retail Sales.

The Company’s Headquarters moved to a building on Milbank on the South Bank of The Thames where only administration affairs were to be carried out.

With the closure of the The Store on  The Haymarket, a new Flagship Store strictly for retail, opened in September 2012 at 121-123 Regent Street.   The Store was now housed in a building that had began as an art gallery, followed by a restaurant and then as a cinema when it was known as the New Gallery Cinema.

At the time of the opening of Burberry’s new Flagship Store in London, The Company issued an official press release, which clearly states its object and also informs of the exciting experience that is to be had once The Store is visited:

The opening of 121 Regent Street, London, Burberry’s most digitally-advanced brand experience, brings every aspect of Burberry World (burberryplc.com) to life in a physical environment for the first time.  The new store merges futuristic technology with traditional British heritage and style to create a unique shopping experience.

When Burberry’s moved from 18-22 The Haymarket, the building sat empty for a few years, but has since had a number of owners.  It is currently the property of the Amsprop Group, which is an investment company owned by Sir Alan Sugar (1947) and managed by his son, Daniel.

Burberry opened its first store on Bond Street in 2000.  This move reflects The Company’s status as an iconic, global luxury brand.

BURBERRY’S OF LONDON CROSSES THE CHANNEL AND OPENS ITS FIRST STORE IN PARIS

In 1909, Mr. Burberry opened his first store in Paris, which was, and still is, situated at 8-10 Boulevard Malsherbes.

The store on the Boulevard Malesherbes was closed for a while in the late 1960s, but reopened in 1967 following renovation.  Burberry’s launched a large advertising campaign to inform the public that its Flagship Paris Store had now reopened.

The Parisian store is on the site of the former Église de la Madeleine, which had been abandoned by 1765, sold in 1767 and demolished in 1801.

The Boulevard Malesherbes was named after Chrétien-Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes who was the Director of The Library of Louis XV and Louis XVI.  The construction of the Boulevard Malesherbes formed part of the building works undertaken by Baron Haussmann between 1853 and 1870 with the road being opened by Napoléon III in 1863.

Today, the store at 8, Boulevard Malsherbes in Paris is dedicated to Brit & Heritage Lines.  In March 2015, Burberry announced that it was combining three of its collections (Prorsum, London and Brit) under a new single Burberry label.  Burberry stated that the label emphasises the British design of its products which are designed and developed in London.

In December 2011, Burberry opened a new Flagship Store on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.  The Store was the most technologically advanced store in France at the time and consisted of 10,000 square feet of retail space on four floors.  The Store offers both an enhanced sound system and touch-screen technology, which allows the broadcast of content direct from The Company’s London headquarters to the in-store video walls.

In addition, Burberry has a store on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, outlets at Galeries Layfayette, Printemps and Bon Marche Department Stores in Paris and a store in Cannes.

AND MODERN TECHNOLOGY

Burberrys has embraced modern technology and  launched its first transactional website in the U.S. in 2004, which was followed by the launch of a U.K. website in 2006.  The Company began to sell products on-line in both the U.K. and the U.S. in 2006 and to the European Union in 2007.

In January 2011, The Company launched the website, Burberry.com, which is now available in 11 languages to 44 countries and is optimised for iPad, iPhone and other Mobile Devices and allows products to be purchased on-line with ease.

In November 2014, The Company opened a Flagship Store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.  The Store is modeled after the Flagship Store on Regent Street and is designed to bring to life the concept known as Burberry World Live, which was conceived by the Chief Creative Officer (CCO), Christopher Bailey.  Mr. Bailey was also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at this time, but in July 2016, he stepped down from this position and was replaced by Marco Gobbetti.

Burberry World Live, to quote Burberry itself, is a multi-sensory experience, seeded at the Burberry Beijing event in April 2011, is the first to blur the physical and digital dimensions of the brand in front of a live audience, bringing to life the Burberry worlds of British heritage, fashion, music and weather.

To bring this concept fully to life, one hundred large Screens and five hundred Speakers are installed in The Store, which allow the showcasing of the latest Runway Collection, live Burberry events from around the world, videos of the production process etc., etc.

Burberry World Live openings have since occurred in a number of cities around the world to much acclaim.
