IS IT SEPARATION ANXIETY, OBSESSION, JEALOUSY
OR JUST PLAIN OLD LOVE & AFFECTION?
AND BY THE WAY, IF YOU’RE GOING OUT …….
DON’T BE LATE IN COMING HOME!)

Casanova/Puppy dislikes my going out without him. While he was still new to living in my house, I decided not to leave him alone unless it was absolutely necessary and then only for short periods of time. During these days, he took to being somewhat displeased even when I went out to the postbox to collect the mail. To help him learn that I was coming back, I would leave the front door open with the outer screen door closed. He soon developed the habit of coming to the door and looking out and watching my every action and remained there until I returned with the mail.

When I do have to go out for a longer periods of time, I generally leave him sitting on his couch where he watches the passersby and waits for my return. Occasionally something will evidently take place outside, which causes him to leap down from the couch and rush behind it causing my blinds and curtains to fly out in all directions. When I arrive home and walk up my path, I quickly see his handiwork.

I am including Cliff Richard’s version of this song here, since I remember it being released in 1962 and always liked it. Please listen and choose the version that you prefer. I like them both.

When I unlock the front door, I need to open it slowly since he will be standing behind it. I move the door slowly so as not to hit him, which allows his nose to poke through followed by his eyes. Once he is convinced that it IS me standing at the door, he moves back and I manage to get into the house. At once, I am greeted by a wild Fandango consisting of a variety of spins, twists and whirls taking place around me, reminiscent of the Whirling Dervish (as I have previously said) or perhaps The Kerry or Floral Dances.
During this magnificent display and expression of energy and joy, I am whacked a number of times by his wagging tail, which, believe me, can hurt!!! This excitement continues for a couple of minutes while I am forced to remain still and then it suddenly stops. With this, he calmly walks away and takes up a spot to sit and resume watching me!

SEPARATION ANXIETY?
Since I have never believed that a dog could love me, I convinced myself that Casanova/Puppy’s whirling and twirling is a reflection of his fear that I might not come home! A somewhat cynical view of his excitement is that he is glad that I am home since I am the one who feeds him!
I have been told that many dogs suffer with Separation Anxiety especially after moving home. This is a condition where the dog is frightened that its master may not return, and when he does, he expresses great joy at their reunion.

After reading about the various Signs & Symptoms of Separation Anxiety in dogs, I was happy to note that Casanova/Puppy’s behaviour patterns were not including in the signs. Dogs suffering such anxiety often show destructive activity, such as ripping out the stuffing of armchairs and couches and other objects, urination, defecation, barking, howling and trying to escape. In fact, he shows, thanks goodness, none of these behaviours.
And so, perhaps I need to accept that Casanova/Puppy’s twirling at seeing me could simply mean that he really does like me and is happy that I am home!

OBSESSION?
Immediately after Casanova/Puppy came to live in my house, he seemed to want me to spend all my days sitting in my armchair in the living room with him sitting on his couch close by. From his vantage point, he would be able to keep an eye on me and also on what was going on in the front garden and street. Generally, I sat in my armchair during the late afternoon and either read or watched television. He seemed very content once I sat down and often slipped into a light sleep. However, whenever I got up from my chair to go into another room, he would immediately jump down and follow me. Quickly Casanova/Puppy had fallen into the habit of sitting quietly and keeping an eye on me at all times!

Whenever I am out of my armchair and want to go to another room, Casanova/Puppy will immediately jump off his couch and strategically place himself in a position so that I have to either walk around him, climb over him or force him to move out of the way should I want to pass by! Once he sees where I am going, he follows and again takes up a position where he cannot be missed and where he will become immediately aware of any further movement that I may be planning.

I have to confess that I am greatly amused whenever I exit into the hallway from either my bedroom, spare room or office and walk down to my kitchen since Casanova/Puppy always manages to walk ahead of me. He chooses to walk in a very stately and dignified manner and appears to be checking that the chosen route is safe for me to take – rather like a soldier Taking Point.
During Casanova/Puppy’s walk, he will occasional stop and look back to see that I am following now that he has rendered the route safe!

I smile at his parade, as he also reminds me of The Gentleman or Lady Usher of the Black Rod (generally referred to as Black Rod), who walks towards the House of Commons, bangs on the door with his Rod and requests that the Members of Parliament (MPs) accept his invitation to follow him to the House of Lords in order to hear the Queen’s Speech (i.e. The Speech from The Throne) at the State Opening of a new Session of Parliament!

JEALOUSY?
Although Casanova/Puppy has proven himself to be a good host when people come to visit in that he graciously accepts their attentions, he does not enjoy my spending too much time with them and makes his feeling known to me!

I am in the habit of playing Canasta (Spanish; meaning Basket) with friends on a regular basis. We play either at their home or mine. Since Casanova/Puppy came to live with me, I began to notice that at around 3 p.m. on days that we played, he became more than a little agitated and began to interrupt our game by either nudging me or else placing his snout on one of my legs while looking at me with the saddest of expressions on his face! At first, I tried to comfort him, but he persisted with his disruptive activities, which eventually led to him being put outside. Of course, this he did not like being sent from the room and would scratch at the door to show his annoyance.
I remember thinking about this disruptive behaviour one day and suddenly realised why he is agitated on Canasta days. Normally, on other days at approximately 3 p.m., I am seated in my armchair while he is positioned comfortably on his couch. He generally sits and watches me unless something of interest is happening outside. Eventually, he falls asleep, but wakens with a start and quickly checks to see if I am still where he thinks I should be! If I had decided to get up and leave the room, he immediately jumps off the couch and searches me out.

I had to smile recently following a visit from several friends. I left the front screen door open so Casanova/Puppy could look out on the front garden while I saw my friends to their car in the driveway. Once they had driven off, I re-entered my house to be greeted by more joyful whirls and twirls! Seemingly, he was glad that my friends had left and assumed that I was now ready to resume my place in my armchair while he could then happily slip into slumber on his couch!
Evidently, Casanova/Puppy does not enjoy it when our afternoon routine has dared to be interrupted by intruders!

Another activity that Casanova/Puppy really dislikes is when I spend, according to him, too much time at the computer. Whenever I am working on a series for this website or else an article for The Walford Gazette, I tend to spend long periods of time seated at the computer. This activity does not sit too well with him. He will position himself directly behind my chair, which is somewhat dangerous should I suddenly get up, as the chair could roll on him. After a minute or two, he will get up and come around and stare directly at me with a look on his face that I would swear means, aren’t you finished yet?

Perhaps it is incorrect, or at least unfair, to always claim that Casanova/Puppy’s behaviour is Obsessive or Jealous! Recently someone mentioned that when I am in the company of others, he will position himself between me and them. I am told that he does this in order to protect me from possible harm. It would perhaps appear that Casanova/Puppy takes his position of bodyguard very seriously!
Casanova/Puppy having just eaten my breakfast …….. having done so, I presume,
to ensure that it was safe for me to eat!
-oOo-
So what may be concluded from his behaviour? Is it the result of …………..
SEPARATION ANXIETY? ……. Probably not!
OBSESSION or JEALOUSY? ……. Perhaps, at times!
However, after some consideration, I like to think that
it is an expression of
JUST PLAIN OLD LOVE & AFFECTION!
Regardless of its cause, he still wants me not to be home late!
—-oooOooo—
I have just learned a wonderful word which describes Casanova/Puppy very well. When I am eating, he often sits and watches me. Since he has been trained not to beg for food or bother anyone who may be eating in his presence, I do not feed him at my mealtimes. In fact, I do not give him any leftover human food or human food in general. This is not completely accurate since recently I had my first Cook-Out where one of my guests gave him a Hot Dog to eat despite my asking everyone not to feed him. Naturally that guest will not be returning should I have a second such gathering!
To return to the word that I recently learned: the word is GROKE. According to a recent article in The Scotsman, it is an old Scots word that describes someone who stares at you while you are eating in the hope that you will be willing to share your meal with them. This fits Casanova/Puppy perfectly. He is definitely hard to refuse once he turns those sad-looking eyes on you and it is best to ensure that he is outside guarding the house when one wants to eat!
