PART FOUR: A LITTLE LIGHT BREAKFAST!

Casanova/Puppy is now Ten Years Old

-oOo-

It seems to me that the raison d’etre of a dog is to eat! Perhaps this is too cynical a view point and perhaps says more about my own psyche than that of dogs. As I said at the start of this series, I always believed that I would never find a dog that would love me more that anyone else. Although Casanova/Puppy seems happy living with me, part of me still believes that he is only happy with me since he knows that I will give him a warm home and that I will provide him with food.  Note that I have not mentioned affection. My friends disagree with this somewhat maudlin view and tell me that he loves me.

I cannot remember when I first came across the term, a little light breakfast, but I suspect that it was in a Classic Book. I recall being very amused by it, especially since the breakfast in question was huge and consisted of eggs, bacon, sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and lots of toast and multiple cups of tea! The only thing that seems to be missing from the huge English Breakfast of today seems to be the Black Pudding, which appears now to have been fully replaced by Baked Beans! Today, such feasts are regularly prepared for those not caring about their weights at the all-you-can-eat Cafés and Restaurants.

Casanova/Puppy was raised to eat twice daily with no titbits between his meals.  Since he came to live with me, I am afraid to say that I do feed him something a little tasty to munch on between 10 and 11 o’clock and again between noon and 1 p.m. each day. Of course, I am told that I am spoiling him!

Once we have returned from our daily walk to my neighbour’s house and I have removed my coat and shoes, it is time for me to prepare my Breakfast …… and perhaps a little light breakfast for Casanova/Puppy!

Upon our arrival home,  Casanova/Puppy, once again, becomes excited at the thought of what is to come! Firstly at this time, I like to give him a supplement to help him avoid Arthritic problems in his joints. I was advised to do this since, according to my source, Labradors Retrievers are subject to Arthritis. At first, I used to toss the tablet and he would grab it in his mouth, but I noticed that he did not enjoy the taste of the supplement, but perhaps took it just to make me happy!

The supplement comes in the form of a large beige-coloured pill. He does not chew it, which surprised me since it is rather large, but rather gulps it down.  Since he unwillingly accepts this pill, I began to reward him with a little Peanut Butter.  He loves this.  I have convinced myself that this delight is good for him and helps keep his coat shiny, and his coat IS very, very shiny.  In fact, most days, he looks like freshly mined coal – sleek, shiny and black.  Nowadays, I wrap the pill in Peanut Butter and drop it in his bowl.  He now merrily licks up the melange and looks very happy while doing so.

On one occasion, I gave him four small pieces of very dark toast (about one quarter of a slice) with a thin scrapping of Peanut Butter as a special treat, which he much appreciated.  And after this, he assumed that he was going to get some toast every day ……. and naturally, now he does!

Over the days, I have learned from the looks that he has given me upon receiving his toast, which degree of toasting is acceptable and which are not!

But, allow me to insist that I do not spoil him!  After eating his toast with a thin spread of Peanut Butter, it is time for a short nap before spending time outside.

Once, when his bowl was being washed, I gave him his toast on a small plate.  There were some crumbs on the plate caused by my cutting his toast into small pieces.  After gobbling up the toast, he licked the plate until it was thoroughly clean, and in doing so, the plate went around my kitchen with him following it!

Anytime between 1 and 2 p.m., I generally stop doing what I have been doing, and start to think about having some lunch.  At this time, Casanova/Puppy is generally in repose at this either on his couch or else on the front grass, since he had spent the rest of the morning guarding both the front and back fencing from possible attacks.

Casanova/Puppy, in repose on his couch

Like the area before the front fence, the area along one of my back fences separating my garden from that of my neighbour’s, has been worn away by his constant running back and forth.  This has happened since he has to keep reminding my neighbour’s dog that it is his fence and no one else’s!

Once I stir, Casanova/Puppy is up from his repose and comes to find me, and when he does, he is definitely on the lookout in case food is being prepared!  Naturally, I offer him a few little treats, which include two brickets of Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Dental Dry Dog Food together with one stick of a Chewy Treat.
